Penny Kring: "Lighting 10"

We are so thankful that Penny Kring from “Heath Photography” invited us into her studio to share some wisdom! You can visit Penny's website here!

Penny has been in the business of photography for 34 years! She loves that this a business that you can pick and choose what you capture – who doesn’t??

As we come into Penny’s studio, we are prepared to watch and learn as she shows us some lighting techniques and ways to light a subject with just one light, with four lights, and everything in-between! But Penny went farther than just the lighting. She inspires!

Here are a few titbits of information or knowledge that I picked up tonight:

-There is always more to learn and improve. Whether it be in your skills such as: posing, lighting, and/or post production, or whether it is in your business knowledge and application such as: pricing, sales, and/or marketing.

-Read and watch things for inspiration! It doesn’t have to be directly related to photography, but something that inspires and speaks to you.

-Penny recommended The Secret by Rhonda Byrne (or watch the film on Netflix).

-The more up front you are about business, the better off you will be! Be sure you tell them that there is a sitting fee to book a date, let them know what your prices are and that you want them to purchase portrait to hang on their walls, tell them about the experience they will have; talk to them about what to expect!

-Build relationships with your clients!

-Try not to tell your clients no; offer an alternative option if you cannot provide them what they want. If the customer want the print rights, and you don’t sell them, don’t tell them “No.” Set a price; it doesn’t have to be cheap.

-Schedule time to play! We schedule everything else, we make sure to put all of the “important stuff” on our calendars. Be sure to schedule time to play! You don’t want to get burned out from working all the time.

“Believe in the best, think you’re the best, act your best, do your best,

and never ever settle for less than your best.”
