Ellen Dunbar : “Posing; A Small Change Can Make a Dramatic Difference”

Our guest speaker Ellen and Mark Dunbar from “Auntie El’s Video and Photography”

Ellen and Mark Dunbar have been in the professional photography business for 22 years and have been a member of PPSNYS since 2003. Ellen and Mark showed us many photographs of posing ideas; poses that they utilize regularly and examples of small details that can change a photo.

Here are a few quick tips we learned:

When taking a dramatic photo with the subject looking down, be sure not to let the nose go down past the lips to prevent the nose from appearing bigger than it is.

In a side angle headshot, angle the photo just right to keep the nose from extending past the cheek; we don’t what the subjects nose looking too long.

To get a serious/intense look from your subject, try having them focus on the shutter of the camera.

When photographing 2 subjects of significate size difference (height/weight) use camera angles, posing, and/or stools to restore more of a balance between the subjects. Your attention should be drawn equally to each subject.

After learning from examples and discussing with the group, we ended the evening by putting what we learned to action by paring up to practice posing that would best suit each body type and shape for different ages and sessions.
